technical writing portfolio

This portfolio was created to showcase my work and skills as a technical writer. My works range from a rhetorical analysis to a summer research grant proposal to an instruction set for rock climbers to properly top rope. Some of my personal projects that involve technical writing are also featured. These works are more related to my field, biomedical research. I also wanted my portfolio to show off a bit of who I am, therefore, it will highlight some of interests and hobbies.

I am a pre-medicine student at RIT studying biomedical engineering that plans to graduate in May of 2022. Upon graduation I will be working at the Center for Musculoskeletal Research and the University of Rochester. I will work there until I begin medical school, which I am aiming to do in August of 2024.

I have many interests and hobbies outside of my professional interests. Almost all of them include being outdoors. In the summer you can find me outside running, hiking, camping, climbing, or cycling. In the winter I still love to be outdoors either skiing or treking up a mountain with a pair of snowshoes and spikes.

Research Poster BMES Conference

The Biomedical Engineering Society holds a conference every year where research from the field is displayed. I presented my research on electrosprayed microparticles that encapsulated the drug resveratrol. I followed the format of most research posters and was sure to add meaningful and informative figures to help the reader gain an understanding of the research and results obtained. This research eventually was published in MDPI's pharmacuetics journal: Resveratrol Microencapsulation into Electrosprayed Polymeric Carriers for the Treatment of Chronic, Non-Healing Wounds

Research Proposal

A researh proposal for a summer research project for undergraduate students funded by the National Institute of Research. This document also adheres to many of the common conventions of a research proposal. This document is supposed to be persuasive in nature, thurefore, there is a large focus on appealing to the previous experience and expertise that the author possesses.

Cataract Surgery Extened Definition

This work is an extended definition detailing the process of a cataract surgery. I have been lucky enough to have spent many hours in the operating room observing surgeries. Most recently this has been cataract surgeries at a nearby outpatient surgical center. I used scientific literature and my notes from the OR to construct this definition of the process of a cataract surgery. My intended audience for this work is a prospective patient with the goals of giving them information on the process, what their preparation and recovery will look like, and brief description of the pathology of the condition.

Rhetorical Analysis of COVID-19 Vaccine Research

A critical skill in technical writing is being able to learn from rhetorical decisions made by other authors. Choosing what you do and don't like and implementing it into your own works. Similarly, an essential skill in conducting research or being a physician in the medical field is being able to skeptically read and analyze research. This is my analysis of a research article from the prestigious journal Nature Medicine.

Multidisciplinary Senior Design Project Poster

All engineering majors at RIT are required to complete a senior design project. One of the final deliverables is a poster that can clearly and concisely summarizes an entire years worth of work into one visual. My team's project was an electromyography actuated maze where the users flex their muscles to move a ball through a maze (pictured to the right). I had to make sure that I was efficiently using my space and choosing words carefully to get across what I needed to in limited space. I also made sure that all of my visuals had at least some text explaining what was being shown it cannot be assumed that all viewers would be able to parse the information without textual aid.

Top Rope Instructions

Top roping is a form of climbing that involves two climbers and a rope fixed at the top of the route. This document is a set of instructions for how to top rope with instructions for both the belayer and climber. Climbing has become one of my favorite hobbies as it is both physically and mentally challenging. The sport of rock climbing is often viewed as a dangerous sport, however, when the proper precautions are taken it is completely safe and one of the most fun ways to be active. I was careful to make sure the instructions were clear, non-ambiguous, and well labelled to ensure the proper use of equipment and teachnique.
